ABOUT

As a part of the development requirement by the city of San Mateo Arts Commission, Hines and MCQ Fine Art acquired the 96-inch painted aluminum sculpture by Donald Sultan, Three Big Red Poppies, 2016 and commissioned the artist to design the walkway, Reds and Blacks, January 16th, 2017. Weighty and structured, Sultan’s works are simultaneously abstract and representational: while his imagery is immediately recognizable – flowers, daily objects, insignia, idle factories – the dominating, abstract forms contradict its common association with fragility.
